The America Online software waits to long for a response from the host. Unfortunately, pressing Command Key Period does not work all the time. Turning off the modem works, but it takes a long time for AOL to realize that the modem isn't connected anymore.
The solution is simple. Just run Stop AOL whenever you want to terminate AOL. You'll get a Serial Error. Press OK and you can try to log-on to AOL again.
I installed Stop AOL into a utility called the PowerStrip (part of the QuickTools package from Advanced Software) so that I can access it easily with a mouse click. Other file launching programs will probably work well as well.
